TERRY BYRNE

Terry Byrne is a freelance theatre director who has worked extensively in Ireland and the UK. Although he entered the business as an actor, Terry moved into direction at an early stage of his career and has a considerable body of work to his name.

He has worked frequently with Lane Productions, most recently as director of Over the River and Through the Woods by Joe Di Pietro. He is a member of the board of Red Kettle Theatre Company.

Highlights of his work as a director were Twelve Angry Men, which began life in Andrews Lane, then transferred to the Gaiety Theater for an extended run and subsequently played at the Olympia Theatre, the Cork Opera House and the larger provincial venues in Ireland. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest which ran for twelve weeks in Andrews Lane. In 1995 for Red Kettle he directed Deathtrap, Ira Levin's famous thriller, which starred the American movie actor Keir Dullea.

For the London-based Centreline Productions Ltd he directed Marie Jones' Women On the Verge Get a Life for a major tour of the UK, runs in the Belfast Opera House and the Gaiety in Dublin. For Lane productions he directed another Marie Jones play, A Night in November, which opened in Andrews Lane and completed an extended national tour. In 2006 he added Women on The Verge of HRT to his Marie Jones collection.

He has directed two major productions of the plays of John B.Keane plays. The Chastitute, with Mick Lally in the leading role, played at the Gaiety Theatre and in venues throughout the country over a 3 year period. He also adapted and directed John B Keane's book 'Letters of a Matchmaker' under the play title Matchmake Me Do.

In his early career Terry directed a number of plays in Andrews Lane ranging from farces to thrillers. They included Continental Girls and Out of Order Sweetie; and Ariel Dorfman's play Death and the Maiden.

Terry continues to work as an actor when it can be fitted in with directing assignments. He has appeared in plays in The Abbey, The Peacock, The Gate, Andrews Lane and in most of the theatres throughout the country. He has also appeared in several films and television dramas.
